iMac Bondi come monitor
Io vorrei sostituire il mio iMac Bondi con un Mac Mini, riutilizzando l'iMac come monitor.
Gli iMac di prima serie (rev.A e rev.B almeno) hanno un connettore interno che collega il monitor alla scheda grafica. Questo permette di riutilizzare un iMac come monitor senza particolari lavori di saldatura: chiunque può farlo svitando una vite.
Quel che segue è una descrizione di che fare ad uso dell'utente non tecnico.
Il primo passo consiste nell'aprire l'iMac, ovviamente. Sul retro, sotto la maniglia, c'è una vite (a croce) da svitare. Fatto questo, con un po' di movimenti si dovrebbe aprire il guscio inferiore, che è a incastro.
La figura seguente mostra cosa si vede una volta tolto il guscio (appoggiando l'iMac con lo schermo faccia in giù).
Bondi iMac as monitor
I would like to substitute my old Bondi iMac with a Mac Mini, reusing it as a monitor.
The first iMacs (rev.A and rev.B, at least) have an internal connector that links the monitor to the graphics card. This allows to reuse the iMac as monitor without difficult soldering works: anyone may do it easily.

The first step is to open the iMac, of course. On the back, under the handle, you can find a screw (cross type) to be extracted. After that, you can simply remove the inferior shell of the iMac.
The next figure shows what do you see once removed the shell (having the iMac with the screen on a table).
Il connettore interessante è quello indicato dalla freccia. Il cavo va al monitor, ed il connettore non segue lo standard VGA, ma un vecchio standard Apple, su DB15. Esistono o esistevano degli adattatori da Apple a VGA: quello che ho usato io (quello nero) era distribuito con i primi Powerbook.
Io ho testato l'iMac con un Powerbook 12", per cui l'adattatore bianco che continua la catena è il suo.
The interesting connector is that pointed by the arrow. The cable is going to the monitor. The connector is not a standard VGA one, but an old Apple DB15 connector. There are available (at least in the past) Apple-VGA adapters; the black one I used is one of those given together with the first Powerbooks.
The white adapter in the photo is that of a Powerbook 12" I used for the test.
Una volta connesso al computer, ho dovuto giocare un po' con le frequenze nelle preferenze di sistema per il monitor. Quelle sicuramente funzionanti sono 1024x768 a 75 Hz e 800x600 a 96 Hz; sotto non sono sceso.
L'ultima cosa che vorrei scoprire è come spegnere il resto dell'iMac, in modo che non si sentano nè la ventola nè l'hard disk.
Spero al più presto di riusare l'iMac come monitor di un Mac Mini.
After connected to the Powerbook, I had to try different frequencies (in the System Preferences for the monitor) in order to make it work. I found that 1024x768 at 75 Hz and 800x600 at 96 Hz are functioning well; I didn't try less than this.
The last, useful thing is to understand how to definitely shut down the computer part of the iMac, in order not to have the noise made by fan and hard disk.
I hope now to reuse my iMac as a monitor of a brand new Mac Mini.
